Playing capoeira
Playing capoeira
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art, game, and culture created by enslaved Africans transported to Brazil during the 16th century.

They collectively shared their traditions, beliefs and games to form capoeira - a resistance to their oppressors and a voice against slavery.

Participants form a ‘roda’ (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle.

Playing capoeira has numerous benefits. It’s a great way to get fit, improve strength, co-ordination, flexibility, awareness, learn self-defence and relieve stress. Our instructors have many years experience of teaching and training capoeira.

Modern capoeira takes two main forms: ANGOLA – first demonstrated by Mestre Pastinha, follows more traditional capoeira techniques and rituals; and REGIONAL – developed by Mestre Bimba, involving different kicks, holds and acrobatic techniques. We teach a mix of both forms to cater for all preferences.
